October 2026 is the 25th anniversary of Health
Literacy Month.
Health literacy is key for people to understand
and take action to maintain and improve their health. Poor health
literacy increases the risk of poor outcomes. The U.S. Department of
Health and Human Services’ Healthy
People 2030 has this as one of its goals: “Eliminate health
disparities, achieve improved health for all people, and attain health
literacy to improve the health and well-being of all.” It
adopted these health literacy definitions:
“Personal health literacy is the degree to
which individuals have the ability to find, understand, and use
information and services to inform health-related decisions and actions
for themselves and others.
Organizational health literacy is the degree
to which organizations enable all individuals to find, understand, and
use information and services to inform health-related decisions and
actions for themselves and others.”
MEI’s patient education resources meet these definitions because they
are:
Written at the 6th grade reading level
Based on published research
Hopeful and reassuring in tone
Designed using adult learning principles
Grounded in motivational theory to encourage positive
self-management
In support of the Chronic Care Model
Reviewed by patients and other multidisciplinary experts
